Description
After the death of his wife, Remo is fleeing from his life and from himself. His wandering leads him to Lorino, in Emilia Romagna, a seemingly peaceful village nestled in the folds of a territory where time seems to have stopped, stagnant like the swamps that until recently covered the ground and hid treasures. But Lorino is not like other places. Its inhabitants, suspicious and hostile towards strangers, all seem to be searching for something and live surrounded by stories that are barely whispered: nutria digging underground tunnels, green lights dancing in the fields at night, and an ironclad order that forbids digging the earth. Children talk about a city hidden beneath their feet, and Antonino, a boy with curious eyes, is convinced that his uncle Paolo lives down there with the mysterious “people of the Underground.” When a couple goes missing and their bodies are found under disturbing circumstances, Remo finds himself entangled in a web of secrets, grudges, and legends that sink their roots into Lorino’s dark past. Amid inexplicable disappearances, ancient fascist trucks submerged in the swamps, and anonymous letters that hold fragmented truths, Remo is forced to confront a puzzle that seems too big to be real. But every step forward brings him closer to a single, inevitable question: what lies beneath Lorino? A magnetic and unsettling novel, where the echo of the past blends with the mysteries of the present, dragging the reader into a spiral of tension and wonder. Do not trust what you see on the surface.
